Samhain – The End & The Beginning

For those living in Ireland, from a meteorological standpoint the term “Summer’s End” is somewhat ironic. Besides experiencing the recurrence of tyre burning in Northern Ireland (as well as else where in the countryside), the American pushed sweets consumption, and children setting off “illegal” fireworks. We can also look back to the origins and history of what is, Samhain.

Like much of Irish history, there is dispute over specific events. We do know that the current term comes from old Irish Sam meaning “summer”, and fuin meaning “end”. Many scholars believe it was the beginning of the Celtic year and Gaels believed that the wall separating this world to the next was most porous at the time. The Gaelic festival became the Christian All-Saints Day which influenced the customs now associated with Halloween.

On this night we ask the Irish along with all Europeans to take special observance. Contemplate the past, and look to the future.
