In earlier times, since there was no particular geographical or political name for Transcarpathia, its territory was designated by the names of the its administrative counties: Maramaroš, Ugoča, Bereg, and Ung. The general names, Rus’ and Ukrajina (Ukraine) – adapted as Carpathian Rus’ (Karpats’ka Rus’), Subcarpathian Rus’ (Pidkarpats’ka Rus), Transcarpathian Rus’ (Zakarpats’ka Rus’), Hungarian Rus’ (Uhors’ka Rus’), Carpatho-Ukraine (Karpats’ka Ukrajina), and Transcarpathian Ukraine (Zakarpats’ka Ukrajina) – were only used in recent times.

The culture of Transcarpathia as a regionally Rusyn (Carpatho-Rusyn) evolved over a long period. Throughout the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries it formed a constituent part of the culture of the Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains. Because it was constantly the victim of political opression, it underwent a social deformation in the manner of any small stateless people detached from the economic and cultural core of its ethnos.
